Drums

‘I first saw Michelle’s quietly powerful drums in a 2021 exhibition at the DeCoste Theatre Gallery, in Pictou, Nova Scotia. I was struck by the purity of the design. It was clear they were beautifully constructed from materials directly harvested from the earth... or as Michelle would say, ‘Mother Earth’. My impressions of the work were confirmed by watching a number of her compelling short videos of her making. These deepened my understanding of her work, of her self, and of the indigenous culture that is a strong element of her heritage. Her spiritual connections to the earth are transmitted through her art works, her voice, her music, her poetry. They are her gift to the world.
